About Curbcut
Made in San Rafael, California
Curbcut is a one-person software company in San Rafael, California. There is no sales team and no support tier: the person who wrote the scanner is the person who answers the email.
Why it exists
Most websites fail basic accessibility checks, and most of the people who run them have no idea. The tools that would tell them are either built for enterprise compliance teams, or stop at a list of rule numbers and leave the fixing to you. Meanwhile the law has caught up: the European Accessibility Act now applies to businesses selling into the EU, and in the United States accessibility lawsuits against ordinary websites run into the thousands each year.
A curb cut is the little ramp where a pavement meets the road. It was built for wheelchairs, and it turned out to help everyone with a pushchair, a suitcase or a delivery trolley. Fixing what a site fails works the same way: the changes that help a screen-reader user also make a site faster, clearer and easier to find.
How it works
The free scan crawls your site, checks every page against 93 published rules, and renders each one in a real browser to measure the things HTML alone cannot show: colour contrast, keyboard focus, whether it fits a phone. A paid fix pack then does the part nobody else does. It writes the fixes, organised by who applies them: your content team, your developer, or the AI assistant you build with, and includes a re-scan to verify them.
The checks themselves are deterministic and run the same way every time. A language model is used only to write text a person would otherwise have to write, such as alternative text and a plan of attack, and everything it drafts is marked for your review.
What it will not tell you
An automated check can prove that specific failures exist. It cannot prove a site is accessible or compliant, and Curbcut never claims otherwise. Some requirements need a human, and the pack lists them for you to check by hand. If you need a formal conformance audit, we will tell you so and point you at qualified practitioners.
How the business works
Curbcut is paid for by the people who use it. There is no venture money, no free tier subsidised by selling data, and no advertising on the site. Our policies are written in plain English, adapted from the open-source policies Basecamp publishes, and say exactly what we collect and why.
